Matthew 6:1-4 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/31/2022)…

NOTE: The following is derived and edited from an article titled “10 Sins Jesus Condemns Most Harshly in Scripture” by Cortney Whiting (7/9/2019). The challenge is that of disciplined prayerful self-examination as opposed to a critique of others.

#4: HYPOCRISY

Matthew‬ ‭6:1-4‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) “Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get. But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”

‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2:1‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech.

Mark 6:1-6 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/30/2022)…

NOTE: The following is derived and edited from an article titled “10 Sins Jesus Condemns Most Harshly in Scripture” by Cortney Whiting (7/9/2019). The challenge is that of disciplined prayerful self-examination as opposed to a critique of others.

#3: UNBELIEF

Mark‬ ‭6:1-6‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown. The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, “Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?” Then they scoffed, “He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.

Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.” And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people.

John‬ ‭3:17-18, 36‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) “God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life.”…Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.

Luke 18:9-14 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/29/2022)…

NOTE: The following is derived and edited from an article titled “10 Sins Jesus Condemns Most Harshly in Scripture” by Cortney Whiting (7/9/2019). The challenge is that of disciplined prayerful self-examination as opposed to a critique of others.

#2: PRIDE

Luke‬ ‭18:9-14‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’

But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

‭‭

Proverbs‬ ‭16:18‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.

Matthew 19:20-22 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/28/2022)…

NOTE: The following ten-part series is derived and edited from an article titled “10 Sins Jesus Condemns Most Harshly in Scripture” by Cortney Whiting (7/9/2019). The challenge is that of disciplined prayerful self-examination as opposed to a critique of others.

#1: SELFISHNESS

Matthew‬ ‭19:20-22‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) “I’ve obeyed all these commandments,” the young man replied. “What else must I do?”

Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Philippians‬ ‭2:3-5‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

Luke 7:36-50 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/25/2022)

“This is what the cross is all about. No one could ever achieve the holy perfection necessary to stand before God. Sin infects every area of our lives, no matter how “good” we are. Perfect, sinless (debt-free, wealthy) Jesus chose to die, the perfect for the imperfect, so we could have life. Simon the Pharisee was blinded to his need by his self-righteousness. But the woman was illumined to her need by her sin…It is only by God’s mercy that we are aware of our sin.”

R. Kent Hughes

Luke, Vol. 1

Luke‬ ‭7:36-50‬ ‭(NLT‬) One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat.

When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”

Then Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.”

“Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied.

Then Jesus told him this story: “A man loaned money to two people—500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other. But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?”

Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.”

“That’s right,” Jesus said. Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.

“I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.” Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”

The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?”

And Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Psalm 145:18 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/24/2022)…

“When it seems as if God is far away, remind yourself that He is near. Nearness is not a matter of geography. God is everywhere. Nearness is likeness. The more we become like the Lord, the nearer He is to us.”

Warren Wiersbe (1929-2019)

Pastor, Bible teacher and author

Psalms‬ ‭145:18‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth.

‭‭

Proverbs‬ ‭15:3‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping his eye on both the evil and the good.

Psalms‬ ‭139:7-12‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.

Genesis 1:27-28, 31 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/23/2022)…

“Monkeys are superior to men in this: When a monkey looks into a mirror, he sees a monkey.”

Malcolm De Chazal (1902-1981)

Mauritian writer, painter, and visionary

Genesis‬ ‭1:27‬-28, 31 (NLT‬‬) So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”…Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!

‭‭

Psalms‬ ‭139:13-16‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.

‭‭

Ecclesiastes‬ ‭3:11-13‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end. So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.

Luke 8:19-21 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/22/2022)…

“Attention to God’s Word must be coupled with a willingness to do it, or the truth of it will fade.

Has God’s Word impressed on you that you must forgive? Then do it!

Has God’s Word impressed on you that you must confess a wrongdoing? Do it!

Has God’s Word impressed on you that you must apologize? So do it!

Has God’s Word impressed on you that you must speak the truth regardless of the consequences? Then do it!

Has God’s Word impressed on you that you must discontinue a certain practice? Do it!”

R. Kent Hughes

Luke, Vol. 1

Luke‬ ‭8:19-21‬ ‭(ESV‬‬) Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

James‬ ‭1:22-25‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

Luke 8:22-25 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/21/2022)…

“This is a vital principle of spiritual life: Without difficulties, without trials, without stresses, and even failures, we would never grow to be what we should become. Storms are a part of the process of spiritual growth.”

R. Kent Hughes

Luke, Vol. 1

Luke‬ ‭8:22-25‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and started out. As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger.

The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”

When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm. Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?”

The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!”

Isaiah 2:2-4 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/18/2022)…

“My first wish is to see this plague of mankind, war, banished from the earth.”

George Washington

Isaiah‬ ‭2:2-4‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) In the last days, the mountain of the Lord’s house will be the highest of all— the most important place on earth. It will be raised above the other hills, and people from all over the world will stream there to worship. People from many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of Jacob’s God. There he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For the Lord’s teaching will go out from Zion; his word will go out from Jerusalem. The Lord will mediate between nations and will settle international disputes. They will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will no longer fight against nation, nor train for war anymore.

Luke 9:23-25 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/17/2022)…

“There is no such thing as a private crucifixion.”

Pastor Dustin Dozier

Upstate Church, Five Forks, SC

Luke‬ ‭9:23-25‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed?”

Galatians‬ ‭2:20‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 1:10 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/16/2022)…

“We must give up the idea of trying to please everyone. The thing is impossible, and the attempt is mere waste of time. We must be content to walk in Christ’s steps, and let the world say what it likes. Do what we will, we shall never satisfy it, or silence its ill-natured remarks.”

John Charles Ryle (1816-1900)

Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, England

Galatians‬ ‭1:10‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.

Apostle Paul

‭‭

1 Thessalonians‬ ‭4:1‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Finally, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, as we have taught you. You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more.

Ephesians‬ ‭5:10-11‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.

Acts 4:13 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/15/2022)…

“God can achieve his purpose either through the absence of human power and resources, or the abandonment of reliance on them. All through history God has chosen and used nobodies, because their unusual dependence on him made possible the unique display of his power and grace. He chose and used somebodies only when they renounced dependence on their natural abilities and resources.”

Oswald Chambers (1874-1917)

Scottish Baptist evangelist and teacher

Author of “My Utmost For His Highest”

Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭4:13‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.

‭‭

1 Corinthians‬ ‭1:26-29‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.

Proverbs 18:15 (NLT)

 FROM TODAY’S READING (3/14/2022)…

“If we are keenly alert and aware of the rock and what we are doing on it, if we are honest with ourselves and our capabilities and weaknesses, if we avoid committing ourselves beyond what we know is safe, then we will climb safely. For climbing is an exercise in reality. He who sees it clearly is on safe ground, regardless of his experience or skill. But he who sees reality as he would like it to be, may have his illusions rudely stripped from his eyes when the ground comes up fast.”

Royal Robins (1935-2017)

American Rock Climber

Proverbs‬ ‭18:15‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Intelligent people are always ready to learn. Their ears are open for knowledge.

Philippians‬ ‭4:6-7‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

James 4:1-2 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/11/2022)…

“Who has ever told the evils and the curses and the crimes of war? Who can describe the horrors of the carnage of battle? Who can portray the fiendish passions which reign there! If there is anything in which earth, more than any other, resembles hell, it is its wars.”

Albert Barnes (1798-1870)

American theologian and author

James‬ ‭4:1-2‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them…

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/10/2022)…

“A bend in the road is not the end of the road…unless you fail to make the turn.”

Helen Keller

Psalms‬ ‭34:14‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.

Proverbs‬ ‭4:5-7‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Get wisdom; develop good judgment. Don’t forget my words or turn away from them. Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you. Love her, and she will guard you. Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.

Anonymous

Lamentations‬ ‭3:40-42 (NLT‬‬) Instead, let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn back to the Lord. Let us lift our hearts and hands to God in heaven and say, “We have sinned and rebelled, and you have not forgiven us.”

2 Corinthians 4:18 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/8/2022)…

“You can either complain that rose bushes have thorns, or that thorn bushes have roses.”

Pastor Duane King (1937-2022)

NOTE: Duane started and oversaw the creation of the first American Sign Language translation of the Bible.

2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:18‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

John 14:27 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/7/2022)…

“Meeting Christ brings a peace previously unknown. ‘Peace I leave with you,’ says Jesus, ‘my peace I give you’ (John 14:27). The soul then has a sense of rest and well-being it has never known, even in the best of times. Getting to know Christ better and better through his Word brings us divine wisdom for living…a wisdom that slows down or reverses the destructive patterns in our lives. We experience new stability, self-control, and discipline.”

R. Kent Hughes (Luke, Vol. 1)

John‬ ‭14:27‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

‭‭

James‬ ‭1:5‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.

Ephesians‬ ‭2:8-10‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Proverbs 31:8 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/4/2022)…

“I can't help thinking of the old woman who started out when the war commenced with a [fireplace] poker in her hand. 1 Corinthians 16:13 (NLT)

FROM TODAY’S READING (3/3/2022)…

“Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened.”

Billy Graham

Psalms‬ ‭27:14‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.

‭‭

1 Corinthians‬ ‭16:13‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.

Psalms‬ ‭56:1-7‬ ‭(NLT‬‬) O God, have mercy on me, for people are hounding me. My foes attack me all day long. I am constantly hounded by those who slander me, and many are boldly attacking me. But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?

They are always twisting what I say; they spend their days plotting to harm me. They come together to spy on me— watching my every step, eager to kill me. Don’t let them get away with their wickedness; in your anger, O God, bring them down.
